| ACQUISITION OF JAPANESE NATIONALITY BY LEGITIMATION |
| If you were born before your father (Japanese) and your mother (non-Japanese) got married and then became a legitimate child by the marriage of your parents and acknowledged by the father, you can acquire the Japanese nationality. You have to submit a notification to Legal Affairs Bureau. This notification has to be submitted before you reach the age of 20 years old |
| LEAVING JAPANESE NATIONALITY |
| If you have both Japanese and foreign nationalities, you can leave Japanese nationality by making a notification to Legal Affairs Bureau. |
| REACQUISITION OF JAPANESE NATIONALITY |
| If you were born in a foreign country and acquired the foreign nationality but you did not withhold Japanese nationality, you lose Japanese nationality. However, you can acquire Japanese nationality by making a notification if you have an address in Japan, and you are under the age of 20 years old. |
